The relativity of color perception

چکیده
Physical colors, i.e. reflected or emitted lights entering the eyes from a visual environment, are converted into perceived colors sensed by humans neurophysiological mechanisms. These processes involve both three types of photoreceptors, LMS cones, and spectrally opponent non-opponent interactions resulting activity rates ganglion lateral geniculate nucleus cells. Thus, color perception is phenomenon inherently linked to an experimental environment (the scene) observing apparatus human system). This clearly reminiscent conceptual foundation relativity quantum mechanics, where link between physical system measuring instruments. The relationship was explicitly examined for first time physicist H. Yilmaz in 1962 point view. main purpose this contribution present rigorous mathematical model that, taking account trichromacy opponency, permits explain on purely theoretical basis relativistic phenomena argued Yilmaz. Instead relying directly considerations, we base our theory interpretation together with just one assumption, called axiom, that summarizes well-established properties trichromatic vision within framework Jordan algebras. We show how approach allows us reconcile Hering’s opponency also derive without any additional assumption. In doing so, introduce several novel mathematically definitions chromatic attributes discuss their counterparts classical colorimetry. Finally, underline important role played Hilbert metric its compatibility known data.

Simultaneous contrast and gamut relativity in achromatic color perception
Simultaneous contrast refers to the respective whitening or blackening of physically identical image regions surrounded by regions of low or high luminance, respectively. A common method of measuring the strength of this effect is achromatic color matching, in which subjects adjust the luminance of a target region to achieve an achromatic color match with another region. Here I present psychoph...
متن کاملAcquisition of categorical color perception: a perceptual learning approach to the linguistic relativity hypothesis.
Color perception can be categorical: Between-category discriminations are more accurate than equivalent within-category discriminations. The effects could be inherited, learned, or both. The authors provide evidence that supports the possibility of learned categorical perception (CP). Experiment 1 demonstrated that observers' color discrimination is flexible and improves through repeated practi...
متن کاملColor categories: Confirmation of the relativity hypothesis
The question of whether language affects our categorization of perceptual continua is of particular interest for the domain of color where constraints on categorization have been proposed both within the visual system and in the visual environment. Recent research (Roberson et al., 2000; Roberson et al., in press) found substantial evidence of cognitive color differences between different langu...
متن کاملEntropy, Perception, and Relativity
In this paper, I expand Shannon's definition of entropy into a new form of entropy that allows integration of information from different random events. Shannon's notion of en-tropy is a special case of my more general definition of entropy. I define probability using a so-called performance function, which is de facto an exponential distribution. Assuming that my general notion of entropy refle...
